COP29 today was dedicated to Energy, Peace Relief and Recovery.
⭐ What happened on Day 5?
An open letter signed by key leaders such as former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, called on UNFCCC to have stricter eligibility criteria “to exclude countries who do not support the phase out/transition away from fossil energy” from being COP hosts.
Continued backlash for the Azerbaijani Presidency as it was revealed that more than 130 country badges were given to oil and gas companies and their staff by the Azerbaijani government. Other analysis indicated that there may be more than 1,700 fossil fuel lobbyists currently at COP29. UAE and COP28 had received similar backlash last year.
The Presidency announced that a total of 132 countries have joined the COP Truce Appeal, an initiative which urges nations to halt military operations during the month of COP.
Several countries including UK, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Sweden, US, Brazil backed an energy storage pledge aiming to increase global storage capacity by six times by 2030.
