Nov 16 at COP29 was dedicated to Science, Technology, Innovation/ Digitalization. Today is typically the biggest day for activism during COP with marches, demonstrations and protests. Today also marks the end of Week 1 with a rest day planned for tomorrow.
⭐ What happened on Day 6?
Demonstrations were held inside the venue where chanting was not allowed given proximity to negotiating rooms. Climate activists held a ‘silent’ demonstration waving flags, snapping fingers, humming in a human chain outside one of the main plenary halls. Watch it here.
Negotiations on climate finance remain slow with no significant breakthroughs reported on the NCQG.
At COP28, countries agreed to ‘transition away from fossil fuels’ - the first explicit mention of moving away from fossil fuels in a final text. Countries are now struggling to decide what this means and what’s next. Particularly, there are informal reports that Saudi Arabia and China are blocking progress.
The Presidency launched the ‘Green Digital Declaration’ endorsed by 90+ governments with an aim to leverage digital tools for climate action while balancing the need to address the environmental impacts of digitalization and increase digital inclusion and accessibility.
Elsewhere in the world, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen stopped in Ankara in an attempt to reach a deal. Turkiye and Australia are both bidding to host COP31 in 2026.
